A WebQuest: Hibernation

科目:英语 年级:高中三年级

按:这是我在几年前设计出来的,也是我唯一的WebQuest英语教案/学案。如今,教材内容虽已过时,然而设计思想仍然是超前的。有兴趣的朋友,可将此教案/学案作为参考。



Introduction

  • This Webquest,designed for the English teaching in Senior Grade III ,integrates the text learning into a probject-based learning.The students will learn the text,after which they can search the internet for more information in a guided way.They will display their findings in a certain form,either a Powerpoint slide show, a webpage or a multimedia product.The teacher ,now working as a facilitator and an organizer,will evaluate the students and their products according to the provided rubrics.
  • The students are encouraged to work in groups,though they can choose to work individually .The English teacher can decide on that according to the student's usual performances and qualities.And when the students work in groups,they can play different roles in the activity.
  • Recommended time: 2 periods with an interval of a few days during which the students can explore online after class.

Text Learning

  • As this WebQuest is in reality an extension of Unit 24 “Hibernation” in BookVI(Senior III),the teacher is supposed to teach the the text before using the WebQuest.Here is the lead-in part,which the teacher might find useful in your text teaching.Click here to begin. Task

Suppose you work as a journalist for a science magazine called “Animal World”.You,as well as a photographer and a biologist,will be sent to Animals' Kingdom for a report on animals hibernation. You're supposed to visit some animals and observe their hibernation.

If you three work as a group,two will be repsonsible for keeping records of what you will see while the other one for photographing.When it's time to present your final product,it's supposed to be base on cooperative efforts.

Having packed all your necessities,you're ready to set off on a trip.......

Process

After having stayed in the Animals' Kingdom for some time,you're supposed to answer the questions below:

1、What animals hibernate in winter?

2、What animals don't have to hibernate in winter?

3、Where can we find some hibernating animals?

4、How can we recognize hibernating animals?

5、What preparations do animals have to make before hibernating?

6、How do animals get their water supply during their hibernation?

7、How many degrees Fahrenheit does your temperature stay at in winter?

  • As all the linked websites are built in the English language,the students might have some difficulty understanding all the information provided. Here two choices are offered for the students to get an easier and better understanding of the English websites.They can use a Chinese software called "Ciba" or refer to an online dictionary.

Tips:An interpretation appears when the cursor is pointed to a word.Make sure the software is running when you surf over the internet.An icon can be spotted in the Task Bar when the software is minimized.

Now that the students have been searching over the internet so far,they're supposed to have collected much information about animals' hibernation.Now it is time that they sorted out their information,and then composed  an essay or make a webpage or  a multimedia product to display their findings.The rubrics with which to evaulate their products are as follows:

Conclusion

Through this online intriguing activity ,the students,guided by the English teacher ,are supposed not just to learn the text ,but also build up some fine abilities or qualities,such as creativity,query, research, information-collection ,the proper application of information technologies and the good sense of nature.This activity , conducive to the students' cooperation and metacognition,also helps build up a full-functioning human being.
